This article, a worthy read, was written ten years ago for Vanity Fair. It offers up the concept of our nation as a being with a birthdate, and hence, is subject to the astrological attributes of the sign of Cancer. The author makes the assumption that America was born on July 4, 1776, the day which the Declaration of Independence was signed and sealed.
I, on the other hand, take a different view. To me, this concept is comparable to one’s time of birth being the same day as the birth certificate was completed and entered into record. This is rarely the case. I present the notion that our country was born on the first day of concerted bloodshed, the first day that men began sacrificing their lives to be free of British rule. I believe we were truly born on April 19, 1775, the day on which the battles of Lexington and Concord were fought.
Instead of being a Cancer, we may be an Aries on the Taurus cusp. Aries are bold, forward-looking, and trailblazing pioneers. They relish a valiantly-fought battle for the ideals of freedom, personal growth, and fairness. At their worst, they are naieve, aggressive, and have trouble finishing what they start. At their best, usually in conjunction with some objective life experience, they are motivational, generous to a fault, and make worthy leaders.
At the Taurus cusp, we find some bullish, seemingly at-odds qualities that butt heads with the Aries ram. Security, wealth, status quo, and a fear of change are at the heart of Taurus’ makeup. At their worst, they are closed-minded, overly-sentimental, overly-sensitive, and decide to be a cheapskate when they should be buying the best they can afford. At their best, they are deeply loyal, give from a place of love, and stubbornly courageous when the chips are down.
